The Inappropriate Suitor
WRITTEN BY ERIK HAMMEN
DIR. BY STEVEN STERNE
This show kicked off my three-show arc of original scripts. I was recommended for the job by someone who had to turn it down, and it ended up being a rollicking good time.
Thematically, Suitor was a mix of German Expressionism and Twilight Zone-era sci-fi. Sci-fi, I have since learned, requires a lot of work from the designers, and when you're trying to do a sci-fi play on a shoe-string budget, the sound design shoulders...pretty much all of the burden. I used sound to create a laboratory; a skating rink; a bar; a dungeon; a sled-like device that could hover off the ground; and a party full of people, even though the audience only ever saw 7.
And yes, all of those effects were all for the same show.
